I was asked to design a work of art for my synagogue to fill a large empty wall. I sent out an all points bulletin to get congregants to send in any broken Judaica objects to be used for a large mosaic installation. Many members sent in candleholders, Hanukkah menorahs, cups and plates and even old ashtrays from Israel. I used all these pieces to design 4 dancing figures. Once installed the prior owners of the objects were delighted to see their donations taking on a new life in the hallway of our synagogue.
Mosaic Installation- South Orange Middle School, South Orange, NJ
For many years I have explored the art of mosaics after collecting and organizing broken pots, pottery shards, china plates and ceramic tiles, mirrors and other miscellaneous treasures. I jumped in headfirst to create a variety of mosaic art projects. My students caught mosaic fever from me and together we created life sized student musicians with broken musical instruments and all kinds of bits and pieces. The students worked brilliantly together and lovingly searched for more interesting materials to develop the mosaic installation. I am not sure who had more fun, the student artists or their teacher.
